Hi, I’m John — and I’ve been teaching English for many years. I love this language: its rhythm, its quirks, and especially its idioms. But what I enjoy most is helping people feel confident when they speak English.
My teaching journey began in Zaragoza, Spain. It was a fantastic first year — full of learning, fun, and a real love for the job. Since then, I’ve taught in schools across Dublin and trained professionals in workplaces all over Ireland. I have created schools and designed courses.
From business English to everyday conversation, I’ve worked with learners from many different backgrounds. I’ve always focused on helping people understand and use natural English — especially phrasal verbs and idioms.
Very early in my career, I became fascinated with phrasal verbs — those small, tricky expressions that carry so much meaning. I discovered something powerful: the particle (like out, up, or off) is the key to understanding how these verbs work. That insight changed how I teach, and how my students learn.
This course can also help improve your IELTS score. Many students have excellent grammar, but struggle with idiomatic language — which can lower their speaking and writing scores. This course fixes that issue, giving you the tools to sound natural, fluent, and confident.
Teaching gives me energy. It takes focus and empathy, but it’s always worth it. I believe the right explanation can unlock English for anyone.
That’s why I created Listen to Advance — to make idiomatic English clear, useful, and fun to learn.
Many IELTS candidates struggle with phrasal verbs because they’re not taught clearly in textbooks—and yet they appear constantly in native speech and IELTS marking criteria. This course breaks down 100+ commonly used phrasal verbs in practical, real-life situations. It teaches you how native speakers really use English—so you sound less like a textbook and more like a fluent speaker.
